Planet Formation in the Outer Solar System

چکیده

This paper reviews coagulation models for planet formation in the Kuiper belt, emphasizing links to recent observations of our and other solar systems. At heliocentric distances of 35–50 AU, single-annulus and multiannulus planetesimal accretion calculations produce several 1000 km or larger planets and many 50–500 km objects on timescales of 10–30 Myr in a minimum-mass solar nebula. Planets form more rapidly in more massive nebulae. All models yield two power-law cumulative size distributions, with for radii q N ∝ r q p 3.0–3.5 C km and for radii km. These size distributions are consistent with observations of Kuiper 2.5 r 10 N ∝ r r 1 C belt objects acquired during the past decade. Once large objects form at 35–50 AU, gravitational stirring leads to a collisional cascade where 0.1–10 km objects are ground to dust. The collisional cascade removes 80%–90% of the initial mass in the nebula in ∼1 Gyr. This dust production rate is comparable to rates inferred for a Lyr, b Pic, and other extrasolar debris disk systems.

The outer solar system

The outer solar system extends beyond a heliocentric distance of 5AU. It contains the giant planets and their systems (rings and satellites), the Kuiper belt, the comets (except those which approach episodically the inner solar system) and, at its outer edge, the Oort cloud. The outer solar system physically corresponds to the region located outside the « snow line » which corresponded to the d...

Hybrid Mechanisms for Gas/Ice Giant Planet Formation

The effects of gas pressure gradients on the motion of solid grains in the solar nebula substantially enhances the efficiency of forming protoplanetary cores in the standard core accretion model in ’hybrid’ scenarios for gas/ice giant planet formation. Such a scenario is ’migration-enhanced’ core accretion which results from Epstein-drag induced inward radial migration of mm-sized grains needed...

Outer Irregular Satellites of the Planets and Their Relationship with Asteroids, Comets and Kuiper Belt Objects

Outer satellites of the planets have distant, eccentric orbits that can be highly inclined or even retrograde relative to the equatorial planes of their planets. These irregular orbits cannot have formed by circumplanetary accretion and are likely products of early capture from heliocentric orbit. The irregular satellites may be the only small bodies remaining which are still relatively near th...

Dynamical Shakeup of Planetary Systems Ii. N-body Simulations of Solar System Terrestrial Planet Formation Induced by Secular Resonance Sweeping

We revisit the “dynamical shakeup” model of Solar System terrestrial planet formation, wherein the whole process is driven by the sweeping of Jupiter’s secular resonance as the gas disk is removed. Using a large number of 0.5 Gyr-long N-body simulations, we investigate the different outcomes produced by such a scenario. We confirm that in contrast to existing models, secular resonance sweeping ...

Solar System Formation Deduced from Observations of Matter

Aspects of our Solar System’s formation are deduced from observations of the chemical nature of matter. Massive cores are indicative of terrestrial-planet-composition-similarity to enstatite chondrite meteorites, whose highly-reduced state of oxidation may be thermodynamically stable in solar matter only at elevated temperatures and pressures. Consistent with the formation of Earth as envisione...

Final Stages of Planet Formation

We address three questions regarding solar system planets. What determined their number? Why are their orbits nearly circular and coplanar? How long did they take to form? Runaway accretion in a disk of small bodies resulted in a tiny fraction of the bodies growing much larger than all the others. These big bodies dominated the viscous stirring of all bodies. Dynamical friction by small bodies ...
